| in vitro | NMDA (N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid) is an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter that specifically binds to the NR2 subunits of its receptor without affecting other glutamate receptors (such as those for AMPA and kainate). This compound stimulates the opening of a non-specific cation channel, allowing the passage of Ca2+ and Na2+ into the cell and K+ out of the cell. Its activation can produce excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSP) and trigger an increase in intracellular Ca2+ content, which may further participate in various signaling pathways. The NMDA receptor plays a key role in a wide range of physiological (e.g., long-term potentiation and neuronal plasticity) and pathological processes (e.g., excitotoxicity and epilepsy). |
